There is no doubt that Social Media has redefined connection and boosted information sharing far beyond the scope we could have predicted in it’s earliest stages of development, but like any powerful tool it can be difficult to understand and dangerous when wielded incorrectly.
From the beginning stages of forums such as Usenet and SixDegrees to the modern day powerhouses of Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, and TikTok, people are able to engage with their local community and build connections with individuals all around the world.
Even MySpace has returned with the goal to bring us back to the roots of social media by simplifying the process and boost nostalgia for those early tech days. So what are the benefits and drawbacks that polorize the heavy use or lack of social media?
As we shared before, social media is an incredible tool to connect people all around the world. You can organize and advertise for a local event or send out mass communications with a specific group or people who follow your account with ease. Other benefits include:
- Quick access to information
- Engaging conversation regardless of physical distance
- Share life updates and major achievements
- Build connections and trust with customers and clients
- Make additional sales online with exclusive offerings
- Stay in contact with family, friends, and acquaintances
With access to anyone with a stable internet connection, buisnesses have seen huge returns on investment (ROI) when it comes to digital advertising and engagement. You no longer have to wait for a letter in the mail, newspaper print, or to go visit a business in person. You can now scroll through services, products, deals, and offerings from anywhere. Most online offerings can even be delivered straight to your door! This is a huge benefit for both businesses and customers.
The downside is we are now inundated with content that is irrelevant on certain platforms. It can be hard to stay focused on the original intent, which was connection with people. Facebook even added a “Friends” featured feed due to complaints that users didn’t want to see advertisements next to birthday and wedding photos of loved ones. Though, one of the work arounds to sneak ads in your feed is the ability for the platform to share pages your friends and family “like” and “follow”.
In addition to generalized advertisments, some users have even reported that things they merely think about and never say outloud seem to suddenly pop up on their feeds and advertisements. So how can we utilize social media responsibly while maintaining the advantage it gives to the market?
The key things for clients and businesses to remember is that your following grows from an appreciation for authenticity, quality services, likeable or relatable talent, entertainment value, and clear communication. If you cater to your brand standards and expectations you will create repeat customers and an engaging community of supporters.
